Victorian Era 1

The Victorian Era: 1837 - 1901

Named for Queen Victoria, Victorian Era jewelry was heavily influenced by the Queen’s tastes during her long and illustrious reign. Marked by the young Queen’s coronation and courtship with her beloved Prince Albert, the jewelry from this time drew cheerful inspiration from the natural world. Motifs rife with symbolic meaning - like snakes, flowers, and birds - were often rendered in rich yellow gold and embellished with colorful gemstones. Wearing jewelry with personalized motifs including horse racing, hunting, fishing, tennis, yachting, and other leisure pursuits was embraced by the novelty-loving public. Napoleon III purchased a horseshoe brooch on a visit to England and they became all the rage upon his return to France. Popular materials of the time included coral, enamel, and Scottish agate, which came into fashion following the purchase of the monarch’s Balmoral estate. Until the 1850’s, all jewelry was handmade. Most pieces were fabricated from high karat gold and silver, as 18 karat and 22 karat gold were the only gold standards allowed in jewelry making. By 1852, advances in manufacturing, such as machine cut settings and early electroplating, made mass produced jewelry more accessible. Following suit, changes in gold standards legalized more affordable karat 9, 12, and 15 karat gold and paved the way for jewelry trends seeded by Queen Victoria to bloom throughout all levels of society.
